Hornbeam - Wikipedia
The common English name hornbeam derives from the hardness of the woods (likened to horn) and the Old English beam, "tree" (cognate with Dutch boom and German Baum).
Because of its thin bark, American hornbeam is probably either top-killed or completely killed by most fires. It occurs mostly in communities that rarely experience fire.
