Rosslyn Chapel, officially the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew, was founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair, Prince of Orkney, as a family chapel and college of canons for perpetual prayer . Completed only in part—the choir and vault—before St Clair’s death in 1484, the rest remained unfinished . After the Scottish Reformation, Catholic worship ceased, and in 1592, its altars were destroyed; the chapel fell into disuse .
